The Council of the EU, representing Member States, adopted Council Conclusions on sport tourism as a contributor to sustainable development. Council conclusions are official positions expressing a common political position, signal strategic priorities without being legally binding. They are able to set the political agenda and get the EU Commission so start initiatives.
The text frames sport tourism as a contributor to local and regional development when it is planned responsibly and proportionately, linking tourism with the social, cultural and health value of sport. It also recognises its potential to support territorial cohesion, quality employment, resilient destinations and the protection of cultural heritage.
The conclusions place strong emphasis on sustainability, climate resilience and balanced destination management. They state that sport tourism can help diversify tourism offers, support less-visited and peripheral regions and provide an alternative to some mass tourism models, while also warning that poorly managed development can create environmental pressures. The text highlights the need for climate-conscious mobility planning, sustainable infrastructure and services, protection of coastal and marine environments, and better use of data and harmonised indicators to support evidence-based policymaking.
Member States are invited to take a more integrated approach linking sport, tourism and sustainability policies, including through investment in infrastructure, mobility, digital innovation, research and cross-border cooperation. The EU Commission is invited to support exchange of good practices, provide guidance on funding opportunities, encourage research and data collection, and explore the role of sport tourism in the future EU Sustainable Tourism Strategy.
For the boating industry, which has a strong sports components, this is positive news and signals further support to the tourism sector.
