EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)

The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) introduces new requirements for companies placing, making available or exporting certain commodities and products on the EU market. For the recreational boating industry, the Regulation is particularly relevant because wood and natural rubber are widely used in boatbuilding, refit and components.

To help companies understand what the EUDR means for their activities and prepare for compliance, EBI has developed a dedicated 34-page guidance together with Cattwyk, a specialised law firm with expertise in trade compliance, economic security and sustainability. Cattwyk advises companies on foreign trade and customs law as well as product and supply-chain regulatory requirements, making its expertise particularly relevant to the EUDR and its implications for international supply chains.

The guidance focuses specifically on how the EUDR applies to the recreational boating industry. It translates the Regulation into practical information for businesses and addresses typical products, materials and situations found across the boating supply chain.

The EUDR becomes applicable from 30 December 2026 for large and medium-sized enterprises and from 30 June 2027 for micro and small enterprises.

What does the guidance cover?

The guidance provides detailed information on:

  • which wood and natural-rubber products and components used in the boating industry fall within the scope of the EUDR;
  • the distinction between operators, downstream operators and traders, and the obligations applying to each;
  • how the Regulation affects importers, component manufacturers and distributors, boatbuilders, refit yards and exporters;
  • due diligence requirements, including information collection, risk assessment and risk mitigation;
  • traceability and geolocation requirements across the supply chain;
  • due diligence statements and the information that needs to be obtained from suppliers;
  • customs requirements for imports and exports;
  • documentation, reporting and record-keeping requirements;
  • key compliance dates; and
  • a practical checklist of actions companies can take to prepare.

The guidance also looks at typical boating-sector examples, including teak decking, marine plywood, wooden furniture and joinery, natural-rubber components and finished recreational craft, helping companies determine where the Regulation applies to their products and activities.
